As kids, we engage in daily physical play, learning the boundaries of our bodies and those of others as we poke, balance, fall. As we grow up, we are increasingly taught to hold our bodies in socially acceptable positions, maintaining set boundaries, and increasingly valuing written and verbal communication over other forms.

Playfight club re-introduces physical playfulness to adults and the art of reading and communicating through the body. In this session, we will explore nonverbal communication of boundaries by borrowing from martial arts signals (tapping out, taking a knee) and creating our own. After setting some ground rules, we will go through some exercises before entering the playfight arena, and conclude with reflections.

This session is all about getting acquainted with your physical and mental boundaries, and learning when to maintain them and when you can stretch them.

IMPORTANT NOTES

-While we will go through various exercises to prepare us for playfighting, the main form used in this playfight session is essentially wrestling.

-When signing up, please note down any injuries or other physical limitations to keep in mind. Playfighting can be adpated for any body, even if it means you’re thumb wrestling, wrestling with feet, or even psychologically with your eyes. Let’s experiment!

-This is a consent-based workshop. There’s no need to do anything you’re not comfortable with. That being said, this is also a workshop where you are welcome to test the limits of your comfort zones.

About the Facilitator

Yun Lee is an all round cultural worker; performing, curating, facilitating. As a child, Yun was not allowed to do any martial arts training. As an adult they fell in love with boxing and MMA and have been training for several years. They see these martial arts not only as sport or fighting forms, but also as archives and embodied technologies for expression and relation.

Yun currently lives in The Hague, where he curates the lecture-performance series BARTALK and organizes art and technology workshops at iii, and co-runs QTBIPOC space The Hang-Out 070.

“Speak easy in hard times”

Speakeasy
is a new BARTALK workshop/play series dedicated to practicing the art of communication in its many forms.

Guests are invited to introduce their communication approaches or experiments for a smaller audience to practice and play with. These methods can come in the forms such as debates, games, intimate 1 on 1 conversations, storytelling, focusing on non-verbal communication etc.
Each event will come with a signature cocktail (also with non-alcoholic versions) created by artist Gökay Atabek to sip throughout or after the event.
