A lecture-performance, workshop, and open mic by Naya de Souza that explores comedy as a language, medium, and technology for navigating the spectacle or “circus” of late capitalism. Acknowledging the present dystopia, Naya argues that nothing reveals truth more clearly than genuine laughter, as it exposes who we truly are. Within socio-political and art contexts, comedy becomes a tool of ontological disruption, dividing the room in ways that make it impossible for viewers to hide their own prejudices and biases.
In this workshop, we’ll explore how comedy can be a radical act, a deep breath in a suffocating world. Through different disciplines, we’ll examine comedy’s power to confront, disrupt, and heal. And, of course, we’ll laugh.

About the Facilitator
Born in the Caatinga region of Brazil, and based in Berlin, Naya de Souza has stormed the cultural scene with her multimedia cabaret performances and politically charged stand-up sets. Her online “Bundaskanzlerin” serves as a social media critique of Germany’s exclusionary political/art world, utilizing found footage, video collages, photography and memes to create an “anti censorship” language and tackle censored topics. With her pedagogical memes and adept teaching skills, Naya has become one of Berlin’s most influential voices, sought after by art and cultural institutions aiming to engage younger and marginalized audiences in Germany.

“Speak easy in hard times”
Speakeasy is a new BARTALK workshop/play series dedicated to practicing the art of communication in its many forms.
Guests are invited to introduce their communication approaches or experiments for a smaller audience to practice and play with. These methods can come in the forms such as debates, games, intimate 1 on 1 conversations, storytelling, focusing on non-verbal communication etc.
Each event will come with a signature cocktail (also with non-alcoholic versions) created by artist Gökay Atabek to sip throughout or after the event.
